“Romance in Cartagena: A Destination Wedding Story”

Some weddings feel larger than life, and some feel deeply personal — this Cartagena destination wedding managed to be both. With its rich colonial charm, oceanfront ceremony, and vibrant Colombian traditions, this celebration was a perfect reflection of love, culture, and history.

The Setting: A Colonial Mansion in Cartagena

The wedding took place at a privately owned colonial Spanish home in Cartagena’s historic center. The mansion, with its arched doorways, balconies, and lush courtyard, felt like stepping into another era. Upstairs were the family living quarters, while downstairs transformed into a stunning event space — a venue both intimate and grand.

The Ceremony: Two Traditions, One Love

The day began with an intimate beachside ceremony, attended by about 25 loved ones. The couple wanted both of their traditions honored: first, a Catholic priest led the vows; then, a Jewish rabbi stepped forward to guide the Jewish ceremony.

Hearing prayers in two faiths against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea created a spiritual, unforgettable moment — one that embodied unity, love, and respect for heritage.

After the vows, the couple rode away in a classic convertible limousine, heading toward Cartagena’s Walled City. They stepped out to stroll through the cobblestone streets, hand in hand, surrounded by the energy of this historic town.

Waiting for them was the Palenque — a vibrant Afro-Colombian performance of dancers and musicians dressed in bright traditional attire. This ceremonial tradition is rooted in Cartagena’s history and added color, rhythm, and pure joy to the newlyweds’ walk.

The celebration continued back at the colonial mansion. The courtyard glowed with candles and flowers, tables set for an elegant reception under balconies and lantern light.

As the night deepened, guests were surprised with la hora loca — Colombia’s famous “crazy hour.” Performers, masks, confetti, and drums turned the party into a carnival, ensuring everyone was on the dance floor until late into the night.

Why This Wedding Was Special

For Mae Photography, this was more than just another wedding in Cartagena — it was a union of cultures. One family was Colombian, the other Jewish-American, and their celebration honored both heritages beautifully.

Destination weddings in Cartagena always hold magic, but this one stood out because it told a story of love that crossed traditions, borders, and generations.
